On January 8, Lehi teacher, Becky White, was honored by the Alpine School District Board of Education for her 30 years of work as a teacher at Lehi and Skyridge High Schools. Scott Carlson, President of the School Board, read the proclamation.

It was noted that for the last fifteen years White and the Jazz Bear have planned and carried out the Mascot Bowl. The event has become a favorite activity for thousands who attend each year. The idea for the Mascot Bowl was hatched while White was taking her students to visit the Utah Jazz basketball operation years ago. The Jazz Bear and White decided to make the activity a philanthropic event to benefit children at Christmas time. It became known as “Bear Hugs for Kids.”

White wanted to give her sports marketing students “hands-on” experience in organizing and marketing a sports event. Many former students thank White for launching them into a career in marketing based on the lessons learned while in her class.

“This isn’t a class for lazy students,” White explains. “They have certain responsibilities that must be done for the Mascot Bowl to work.”

Each year hundreds of hours are spent making the event a success. The money made in the endeavor is distributed to between 100 and 150 elementary students who go on a shopping spree at Walmart during the holidays. High School students accompany the youngsters as they shop for gifts for themselves or members of their families.

In response to the award, White said, “It was very nice to be recognized by the Board because I know there are many, many others who are equally qualified for this award.”

White will retire at the end of the year after 30 years teaching business communications, marketing, sports marketing, internship, and leadership. She is a graduate of Lehi High School where she was a student body officer. She was active in sports in high school, playing on the volleyball and basketball teams and was Lehi’s Sterling Scholar in business. White graduated from BYU with a degree in business education.
