Peggy Lewis- leaving a legacy of service

Lehi’s Peggy Lewis has been serving Lehi her whole life. On Sunday, May 27, Peggy passed from this life, but not without leaving a legacy of love for Lehi, and a lifetime of service to her family, neighbors, schools, and community.

Peggy started working at Lehi High School when her two youngest children were still in school. She had a passion for helping kids pursue their dreams and worked valiantly as the scholarship and career opportunities advisor at LHS for over 20 years. After her cancer diagnosis, money raised by the community was donated to a scholarship she created called the “Lewis Strong Scholarship.” The scholarship was given for the first time this year to a student at Lehi High School and will continue to be given to one student each year who has been affected by cancer. In the past, Peggy volunteered as PTA president multiple times and worked with many schools in Lehi and with the Alpine School District.

Her niece, Kadee Jo Jones, said, “My Aunt Peggy could sniff out a scholarship for just about anybody! I remember her giving me applications monthly, and because of her dedication, I have been able to go to school debt free. She was the person who encouraged me to apply for Girls State, perhaps one of my favorite experiences, and she genuinely wanted every student at LHS to walk away with some way to pay for their educational dreams and aspirations.”

Peggy and her husband, Stanley, have been involved in the Lehi Round-Up Celebration for many years and were chosen as this year’s Grand Marshalls for the annual celebration. Peggy loved the Lehi Round-Up and was a member of the Lehi Rodeo Committee, Lehi City Celebration Committee, and oversaw many of the stock parades. Her message to Lehi City was, “Join the Tradition,” and each year she spent hours organizing the specialty acts for the rodeo, marketing the celebration, and encouraging all to become involved in a tradition that provides memories for a lifetime.

Sally Francom, publisher of the Lehi Free Press, said, “Peggy was so great as we worked together to promote Round-Up week. She was polite, professional, smart, and kind. We have lost a one-of-a-kind public servant.”

While she loved all aspects of the Lehi Round-Up, Peggy’s favorite part was always the miniature float parade. She served on the float committee and constructed 21 of her own floats. Peggy was a major fan of pom poms and petal paper, and many Lehi residents fondly recall themed floats Peggy designed, such as the puckering frog, the wedding cake, candyland, the silver bandwagon, and the bubble bath.

Peggy served on the Miss Lehi committee, and the Lehi 125th birthday committee. She also served in various capacities within the LDS Church, serving as Stake Young Women’s President, Relief Society President, Primary President, Single Adult Institute Teacher, and Activities Committee.
